Kyoto Dinner Experiments

This work was produced as a part of the Kyoto Art Center “Artist in Residence” program
during the fall of 2010.
20 people with different ages and different backgrounds participated.
The participants was invited to our home, alone or sometimes in groups. Where they
were asked to cook a Japanese fish dish. While we showed them how to prepare a
Scandinavian fish dish. After our first dinner the participants was asked to creata a
hybrid fish dish combining what they learned at our first dinner together with their
traditional way of preparing fish. The cooking together proved to be a way of
communicating without words making the cultural exchange an artwork in itself.
For the project´s exhibition a sculpture in form of a landscape was created.
The landscape was filled with memories and details from our previous dinners with
the participants.
The participants was asked to bring their hybrid dishes to the exhibition were they
would be served on the sculpture during the exhibition opening.
Exhibited togehter with the sculpture was profiles of the participants.
With information about the participant, the recipes and our first dinner and our
experience and impression of each other.
